Show and Fair - see you all on the 11 August

SHOW & FAIR – 11 AUGUST 2012

The best value summer’s afternoon in the country is coming this Saturday, August 11, when the Manaton Show and Fair kicks off at 13:30!
A fantastic afternoon of activities and events will see the following events:

• Children’s Races at 14.00
• Dartmoor Hill Pony Circus Display at 14.30
• Morris Dancing at 15.00
• Classic Cars at 15.30
• Inter Pub Tug of War at 16.00

The Dog Show will run in the next arena from 2pm– same classes as last year, except “most appealing eyes” will be replaced by “waggiest tail”

Of course, the Show part will be in the marquee from the start – given this year’s start to summer, world’s biggest rhubarb could be on. All the prizes, for everything, ought to take place between 4.00 and 4.30, whilst exhausted tug of war contenders refresh themselves for the finals.

Teas, courtesy of the W.I., will be at the Hall and there is a spectacular Exhibition in the Church, featuring the arts and crafts of Manaton and Manatonians, building on the recent Galsworthy Exhibition.

On and around the main field we will have the expected games, stalls and ice creams (get there early, because of the beating sun). Ferret racing is back due to popular demand so make sure you have your racing tickets and the Kestor will be at full stretch in the pavilion.

Rood Screen Funding Update

Our S O S Save our Screen appeal has got off to a tremendous start with donations coming in and a welcome commitment by Ugbrook Environmental Ltd of £5,000 towards it; this helps a great deal when we apply to other Trusts for grants.

Other events in aid of the screen include
Sunday 17th June from 2.30pm to 5pm - Cream tea in the Parish Hall
Sunday 1st July - Christina and John Everett have kindly offered to do a lunch
Saturday 14th July - David and Wendy Wells at Becky Falls are offering a BBQ evening for families which we believe the "scary monsters show"will feature in the entertainment. Plans still need to be finalised so watch this space.

A big thank you to everyone.

Jill Rogers and Joan Hayes, churchwardens.

Pets Church Service - Sunday 12 August

For the last couple of years, St Winifred's church has held its popular Pet Service during the midsummer festivities in the village. This year we are not having it over the Jubilee weekend, but will hold it during the Show and Fair weekend in August ie on Sunday 12th at 5pm; there will be no service in the morning so this will allow the exhibition in the church to still be available during the morning for people to see, especially those doing teas in the parish hall on Saturday.

Catchment
Can you step into the same river twice?

dealing with water and school catchments -
how do the networks of water and school influence us?

Close friends Kim and Vicki are separated when Vicki moves house, goes to a new school and becomes wrapped up in helping a pen-friend in Africa whose village is experiencing a drought - but Kim cannot forget. An old Dartmoor river myth, the siting of a new housing development and conversations on the school bus bring the influence of human and river catchments into sharp focus as the drama moves forward towards the threat of a fatal flood...

This stylised new play features puppets, music and ensemble work in a tapestry of storytelling.
